In 1996 two friends and I undertook our first backpacking experience. We traveled from Costa Rica to Guatemala in six months. We originally planned to travel for a year, but half way decided to do something more useful with our presence in Central America and applied for volunteer jobs in Honduras and Guatemala

Adventure Travelers in America

The travelers we met during our adventure were very different from the travelers you would meet now on the same route. Most people were, like us, looking for a real escape. It would have been rare to find anyone traveling for less then three months. As a matter of fact, most people had started in the northern region of the continent.

They would give themselves eight months or more to do so. The main reason for their trip was not so much traveling in itself; most backpackers were looking for a different lifestyle, which they had found traveling this region. They had already found what they were looking for and had been successful in becoming accomplished adventurers. These adventurers had more time than money and were consciously escaping the first world. The idea was to make a statement against modern life. Traveling to third world countries was their way of expressing disagreement with the hectic first world.

Changes in Central American Tourism

As so very often, things have changed. Tourism in Central America has grown enormously. Nowadays, you will find a different kind of backpacker there. This adventure seeker needs to work harder to find his escape. He will need to travel to even less accessible locations to avoid the vacation atmosphere found in popular destinations throughout Central American countries. Backpacking and adventure tourism has grown more fashionable over the last ten years. It is now most common to take a two or three-week holiday to an exotic place like Guatemala.

The new wave of travelers in third world countries has both downsides and upsides. Tourism is a great way for the local community to develop themselves and create better living conditions. Unfortunately modern tourists have demands that can compromise local communities, forcing them to change their way of life.

A New Profile

What about the environment?

The original article can be found at Adventure Travel: Adventure Travel

The new adventure tourist is much less adventurous as our explorers ten years ago. He is not interested in departing from daily first-world life. He is simply looking for a short break from it all, from the busy, stressed out atmosphere experienced daily in the fist world. This adventurer does not have the time to really adjust to another lifestyle; he just wants a taste of it. Not genuinely interested in getting to know a third-world lifestyle, he is naturally not willing to live like the locals surrounding him on his travels. As if the world is one big museum, he wants to be there and watch from a short distance, experience it without being stuck in it. And with all the riches the world has to offer, who can blame him?

The consequence is that local hotels and restaurants need to adjust their services to this new demand, even if this means loosing their own culture. Although the current traveler claims to be interested in other cultures, he is really demanding it to change to his needs so that he can experience it the way he desires. A shift in backpacking culture is leading to a shift in local third-world culture.

Following my stress-free trip to the Garifuna village of Santa Fe yesterday, a few other guests and myself, requested to go and take a look at an indigenous Indian community within the local area. In spite of all the other great features, I was glad of my choice of because of Tranquility Bay’s willingness to show their guests the nearby areas. I’ve stayed in other resorts and hotels where their main aim is definitely to keep you at the hotel spending as much money as possible. I find this really irritating after a while. If I’d wanted that I would have booked an all inclusive package holiday to Mexico!

This isn’t the situation with Tranquility Bay beach resort and their love of the Trujillo area stands out within their willingness to arrange trips to see the nearby sights. Like I mentioned within my initial report, if you’re looking for a sunshine, ocean and relaxation holiday Tranquility Bay is perfect, but this time around I fancied a little more exploration which was quite definitely catered to.

The Indigenous Indian settlement of Pech is found only 5km from central Trujillo, close to the village of Silin. In contrast to some other destinations in the region, it is a little more set-up for tourists and even offers an official visitors centre. For just a little bit of money a guide takes you round so that you can meet villagers and see them within their daily lives. They have some good local handicrafts and the people were some of the friendliest people I have ever come across. The “celebration of the visitor” culture was definitly present and the villagers were as interested in us as we were with them. It was a great experience and an insight into a culture I’d previously been unaware of.

After out visit, the wonderful Carlos ( caretaker at Tranquility Bay) took us into the Hot Springs hotel that’s on the way back to Trujillo. I have to admit there was almost nothing much happening with the hotel, as it and its eatery were shut, but the all-natural springs were amazing. Unlike when I was hiking in the local rain forest I knew to bring along my swim suit this time. Myself and the other guests jumped into the lovely hot springs with appreciation! As I mentioned, the eatery was shut but Carlos appeared to be informed of this fact, so there was a picnic and a cooler with beers and soft drinks to enjoy. It was a great trip – the springs were an ideal antidote to a day in the heat!

Coming back back to Tranquility Bay, I went the communal route instead of using my kitchenette and ate with the other people from the trip. The food at Tranquility Bay really fills the spot, cooked by Carlos’ lovely wife. During dinner I had a great talk with Linda, one of the proprietors, who told me all about her intent to include horseback riding trips to the local area. This sounded great in my opinion and I told her to keep me informed!

Hotels in Trujillo Honduras appear in many sizes and shapes but I would really recommend a stay at Tranquility Bay if you are heading this way. I can only hope the accommodation throughout the rest of my trip across the North Coast can compete!

I’m a world traveler and travel writer. I’ve been in love with Central America and the Caribbean since I first visited 15 years ago. During my travels, I visit off-the-beaten-path places that are often overlooked by other travelers and write about my experiences. I hope my travel advice will help you plan your perfect getaway! Question by Bethany S: Traveling with My PSD, First time Flyer Need Advice Please?
First time flyer with Service Dog/PSD compounded with the stress of a year absence, as I’ve been hospitalized on and off, more on than off for last year and we have just been reunited and I’m nervous that she is not as well behaved prior to my absence. I have been working diligently to modify some undesirable habits she has inherited but it is taking some time rebuilding our bond and working on basic obedience. Any advice on our upcoming flight to make things easier for all involved, for my PSD, myself, other passengers, all airport staff, would be greatly appreciated. We are going on a mission to Honduras for three months and I think this is a great opportunity for me, my PSD, and the people of Honduras and don’t want to miss out cause I’m to scared, and embarrassed that working as a team with my PSD may cause unwanted attention as we both need brushing up on our training. I sure hope this meets the guidelines for posting? If not I understand and hopefully have focus to modify.
Thanks,

Bethany

PLEASE HELP ALLEVIATE MY FEARS w/ suggestions to make this not seem so daunting.

I have also been looking for a carrier with wheels to get my PSD through the aiprport as inconspicuously as possible so not to call attention to us as well as not being sure what the laws in Honduras might be in regard to have a dog on a leash in an airport. I’ve not been able find anything that accommodates a medium size dog that is approximate 39 lbs., measure 33 inches from nose to tail, 22″ from feet to tip of head and 12″ shoulder to should

. I’m really having a series of issues/panic attacks creating an uncomfortable environment for me and others that I hope alleviate, and don’t prevent us from this opportunity. Now I’m just rambling.

Thanks so much for any help/support and adive.

Bethany

Do not just go to Honduras and hope for the best. Know before you travel what they require for the import of dogs and what they permit for PSDs. Many countries do not recognize PSDs and many others insist that service dogs be transported as cargo and declared upon entering the country.

Remember that U.S. disability laws will not apply in other countries and that the U.S. is very progressive in this area. You will almost certainly have fewer rights in Honduras.

Check the Consular Information Sheet to find out who to contact to get the info you need to import a dog, even a service dog. Certain paper work will definitely be required. You’ll also need paper work to return to the U.S.

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1135.html

You’ll need a rabies certificate at a bare minimum and almost certainly a health certificate from a veterinarian no more than 10 days old when you arrive there.

With a PSD, you will also need documentation from your doctor that you are disabled and require a PSD in order to fly with it within, to, and from the U.S.. Personally I do not think it is fair to single out PSDs and require documentation, but that is the way the law is. The problem is the number of people trying to pass off their pets as PSDs in order to get them on planes, since PSDs are often of unusual breeds and with handlers who don’t visibly appear to be disabled.

You being a mermaid I would go to DR or Mexico they allow Mermaids on the beach and at some pools in the DR. DR has better reef surfing except for cabo MX on the pacific side, Honduras is a little more stuffy.
