Question by Bethany S: Traveling with My PSD, First time Flyer Need Advice Please?
First time flyer with Service Dog/PSD compounded with the stress of a year absence, as I’ve been hospitalized on and off, more on than off for last year and we have just been reunited and I’m nervous that she is not as well behaved prior to my absence. I have been working diligently to modify some undesirable habits she has inherited but it is taking some time rebuilding our bond and working on basic obedience. Any advice on our upcoming flight to make things easier for all involved, for my PSD, myself, other passengers, all airport staff, would be greatly appreciated. We are going on a mission to Honduras for three months and I think this is a great opportunity for me, my PSD, and the people of Honduras and don’t want to miss out cause I’m to scared, and embarrassed that working as a team with my PSD may cause unwanted attention as we both need brushing up on our training. I sure hope this meets the guidelines for posting? If not I understand and hopefully have focus to modify.
Thanks,
Bethany
PLEASE HELP ALLEVIATE MY FEARS w/ suggestions to make this not seem so daunting.
I have also been looking for a carrier with wheels to get my PSD through the aiprport as inconspicuously as possible so not to call attention to us as well as not being sure what the laws in Honduras might be in regard to have a dog on a leash in an airport. I’ve not been able find anything that accommodates a medium size dog that is approximate 39 lbs., measure 33 inches from nose to tail, 22″ from feet to tip of head and 12″ shoulder to should
. I’m really having a series of issues/panic attacks creating an uncomfortable environment for me and others that I hope alleviate, and don’t prevent us from this opportunity. Now I’m just rambling.
Thanks so much for any help/support and adive.

Do not just go to Honduras and hope for the best. Know before you travel what they require for the import of dogs and what they permit for PSDs. Many countries do not recognize PSDs and many others insist that service dogs be transported as cargo and declared upon entering the country.
Remember that U.S. disability laws will not apply in other countries and that the U.S. is very progressive in this area. You will almost certainly have fewer rights in Honduras.
Check the Consular Information Sheet to find out who to contact to get the info you need to import a dog, even a service dog. Certain paper work will definitely be required. You’ll also need paper work to return to the U.S.

You’ll need a rabies certificate at a bare minimum and almost certainly a health certificate from a veterinarian no more than 10 days old when you arrive there.
With a PSD, you will also need documentation from your doctor that you are disabled and require a PSD in order to fly with it within, to, and from the U.S.. Personally I do not think it is fair to single out PSDs and require documentation, but that is the way the law is. The problem is the number of people trying to pass off their pets as PSDs in order to get them on planes, since PSDs are often of unusual breeds and with handlers who don’t visibly appear to be disabled.
