Roatan Travel
Roatan travel is a prime vacation spot for those looking for a beautiful tropical Caribbean island to visit. Being part of Honduras and a port of call for many cruise lines, it has become a tourist hotspot for several reasons.
Being largest of the Bay islands, Roatan, lies just 50 kilometers from the northern shores of the mainland of Honduras. Roatan travel considered by the avid scuba divers in the world. Roatan is known for it’s prime scuba diving! The island is surrounding by reefs that attract tropical fish and several other types of salt water life.
For divers, there are many spectacular sites which include shipwrecks, sea walls and stunning night diving. Some of the animal life divers will experience include dolphins, sea turtles and whales.
Roatan travel is just not for the diver, there is lots to see for the land lubber too! Roatan has a fairly temperate climate year round and sports some exotic wild life. You are bound to see parrots, monkeys, iguana and other tropical life while travelling Roatan. As a matter of fact, just east of the French Harbour, there is an iguana farm that provides refuge for several thousand iguanas. This is an excellent attraction for tourists!
Some of the populated locations on Roatan include, French harbor, Coxen Hole, Punta Gorda and West End. Coxen Hole is the largest settlement on Roatan. It’s a busy place with narrow streets that become crowded with people. It’s also the location for the cruise ships’ port of call. Unfortunately though, Coxen Hole is not the most attractive place in Roatan, but a worthwhile visit.
French Harbor, previously mentioned with the iguana farm, is the second largest settlement on Roatan. It a busy business center with most of the services that first world visitors are used too.
Roatan travel is also quite interesting for it’s mix of cultures on the island. It has a rich blend of Indians and Spanish. As a matter of fact, the primary language spoken by the natives is Spanish.
Settlers are not limited to these peoples, it also has a strong African culture, as Roatan was once predominately black. Most of the people of African ancestry on Roatan are English speaking. It was not until the cruise lines made Roatan part of their travel route with the port of call, did many natives to the mainland of Honduras move to Roatan to support this new tourist venture.
You will also find a small but growing population of settlers from North America and Europe. The inexpensive living, warm culture and stunning sites are drawing many vacationers to become residents over time.
Roatan travel is provided not only by cruise lines. There is also an international airport in Coxen Hole with jet services. Direct flights are available from Houston, New Orleans, Miami and other major cities in the Americas. Be forewarned though, if there is too much rain, airports in Honduras will shut down for safety reasons.
Although Roatan is humid all year round, they have seasons much like other parts of the world. The two predominant rainy seasons are June/July and October to February. Strong winds can accompany rain. If you travel during these months, rain gear is recommended.
Also Honduras has been known to suffer from hurricanes. It is the exception and not the rule though. Travelers to other Caribbean countries like Jamaica have much more problems with this type of severe weather.
