Trip to Honduras, How much money should I take?
I had planned a trip with my 2 kids and Husband to go to Honduras, Well I am getting laid off and have all tickets paid for but am saving for spending money. We plan and staying with his family and will not have to pay to rent a car or anything. I was wondering approx how much money would be enough to spend a whole month out there without feeling we are a burden? I don’t know If from here till the time I get laid off I can come up with more than 2 grand. Do you think that would be enough or will I need more? I am very excited since I am not Honduran, and this is my first family vacation =) My husband has not idea either since it’s been 12 years since he was last there.

That is really dependent on where you are based and how much travel you intend to do. Honduras is reasonably priced however if you intend on staying in one of the main cities or tourist areas it is likely to be more expensive than a small town…
I am just back from 5weeks in honduras but I did spend much of my trip with a research group meaning that I do not have a very clear idea of how much money is needed.
However I can tell you silly student friendly things- if you could let me know where you’ll be based and if you’re travelling much I may be able to get back to you with more information
Firstly 18 lempira is aprox $1- most places dollar is acceptable as long a you are not using to large a note
Drinks- we were able to get drinks in bay islands for 25lemps that were very rum heavy, however fancier drinks like a daquiri set you back 50lemps
A pizza in the bay islands could cost about 70lemps but then in different cafe could cost as much as 220lemps(but was heavier so more filling)
In San Pedro Sula in Baleada express, a plantain with sour cream was about 7-13lempira, a full baleada (with refried beans, sour cream, meat, cheese etc) was about 50lemps
It’s all a bit relative though, if you’re interested in cost of buses/entry fees to copan ruinas etc, cost of diving etc, let me know I’ll try help you out
If you already have your return tickets and are conservative a couple of thousand dollars will go a long way. You can enjoy yourselfs and even help the family with a bit of grocery money. Unless you get really touristy a dollar will stretch a long way in Honduras. The cost of living for most of us is a small fraction of what you see in the U.S., however if you are going to the tourist areas, Bay Islands or Copan for example it is a different story.
